What’s Your Gut Got To Do With It?
Good health starts in your gut!
Your digestive track is home to trillions of microorganisms? Some of these microorganisms are beneficial, some are harmful, and some are neutral.
Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are called “the good” of “friendly” microorganisms (also know as intestinal flora or microflora,) because they are good for your health, particularly your digestive health.
This is important since 70% of your body’s immune defences are thought to be in the gut.
Everything you ingest passes through your digestive system and is absorbed by your gut, providing all the micro- and macronutrients your body’s cells need to function properly.
Healthy skin relies on a range of nutrients such as vitamin A, the B vitamins, vitamins C and D as well as the minerals copper and zinc. If your gut’s ability to absorb these nutrients is weakened in anyway, these essential skin vitamins cannot be absorbed properly.
The strength of this nutrient absorption process depends on the amount of good bacteria present in your gut.
Introducing probiotics to your diet can replenish beneficial microflora which can help restore the proper microbial equilibrium in your gut. A healthy gut leads to healthy skin!
The benefit of probiotics is that they introduce healthy bacteria to the gut and create a barrier to reduce inflammation, which can trigger certain skin conditions, said Dr. Whitney Bowe, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, who has researched the effect of probiotics on acne. She said there is compelling evidence that probiotics hold promise for treating acne and rosacea.
Another way probiotics support immunity is by stimulating the body’s natural defences, and by lining the intestines with a protective layer of friendly bacteria that bars pathogenic substances in the gut from harming the body.
There’s no question that probiotics are definitely in when it comes to the health of your skin!
But it is important to know that the beneficial effects of one strain of probiotics do not necessarily hold true for others, or even for different varieties of the same species or strain.
Not all probiotics are created equal and choosing from the good, the bad and the ugly can be the difference between debilitating diarrhea and a smooth flowing gut!
There are thousands of products on the market but you need to look out for a probiotic with sufficient quantities of high-quality bacteria strains to survive stomach acidity and enter the intestinal tract alive, to be effective.

Exercise to Revitalize

Dermatologist Ellen Marmur, MD, author of Simple Skin Beauty: Every Woman’s Guide to a Lifetime of Healthy, Gorgeous Skin and associate professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine says,
“We tend to focus on the cardiovascular benefits of physical activity, and those are important. But anything that promotes healthy circulation also helps keep your skin healthy and vibrant,”
Marmur goes on to say, ‘In addition to providing oxygen, blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals, from working cells.’
Working out also helps maintain healthy levels of the stress-related hormone cortisol which is associated with sebrum production. Noëlle S. Sherber, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist based in Baltimore says.
“Elevated cortisol levels are linked to increased sebum production, which means more acne breakouts,” She goes on to say that ‘Too much cortisol can also cause the collagen in the skin to break down, which can increase wrinkles and sagging.’
Exercise actually supports the production of collagen,” says Amy Dixon, a Los Angeles–based exercise physiologist and celebrity trainer. “The boost in this protein helps to keep your skin firm, supple, and elastic.”
If you have ever done a spin class or a high-powered aerobics class you’ll know first hand how a good sweat cleans out your pores. Just make sure to give them a good cleanse soon after your work out to avoid clogging.
Dangerous Ingredients In Your Skin Care Products
Regulations on cosmetics and personal care products at best are frightfully concerning! Skin being the largest organ covers about 18 square feet of the human body and needless to say absorbs a large percentage of what you put on it.
Much like the supplement industry, the cosmetic and personal-care industry is equally unregulated.
Of course that opens the floodgate to abuse from unscrupulous companies that produce toxic and harmful products without being properly scrutinised.
There are hundreds of synthetic chemicals in everyday skin care products that are toxic and harmful to your health. And though there is still much debate on the dangers of these chemicals, the fact that you absorb about 60 percent of what you put on to your skin, should make you err on the side of caution. Particularly that some of these chemicals have been linked to skin allergies, cancer, infertility, birth defect and reproductive problems.
Ingredients found in a wide range of beauty and skin care products like Parabens for example contain estrogen-mimicking properties that are associated with increased risk of breast cancer.
Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (FRPs) are used in many personal care products, particularly in shampoos and liquid baby soap.
In 2011, the National Toxicology Program, an interagency program of the Department of Health and Human Services, named formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen in its 12th Report on Carcinogens.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies formaldehyde as a human carcinogen.
Phthalates is a group of chemicals found in hundreds of products to increase the flexibility and softness of plastics and is used as a lubricant in cosmetics. Phthalates are thought to mimic and displace hormones and interrupt their production which can have a range of unpleasant effects on your health.
