50 Lessons Life Has Taught Me

Celebrating 50 and Feeling Super Sexy, Phenomenal and Totally Alive!

I made it and all I can say is… whoa what a ride!

Life! It really has been quite a journey. When I look back, it’s hard to believe it all started 50 years ago. It feels like only yesterday I was running around the park like Sweaty Betty without a single care in the world! Memories of plastering my little sister’s face with make-up while playing dress up. ‘How come she always gets to play Mom and I always end up with the drab overalls’ was my biggest complaint back in those days!

And boy do I remember those long summer holidays when we’d go hunting for bumblebees and butterflies. The fun and frolicking went on forever or at least until it was time to say goodnight to our neighbourhood friends. But I never despaired, in a few hours the sun would return once more and after finishing-up mandatory chores, we’d be out playing again as though our lives depended on it or at least the lives of those poor butterflies we planned to rescue that day!

We were young and wild and free and life was simply awesome, at least the bits I care to remember! Fast-forward 50 years and what does it all mean to me today? Where am I in this quagmire of confusion that is called life? This quest for questions to be answered or better understood. What have I learned, what truths unveiled, secrets discovered and what are the lessons to take forward to the next milestone?

When I started blogging a couple years ago, my goal was to bare all! Not in a rude, crude, Kardashian kind of style but more to uplift, shift and get you feeling less pissed! To inspire and enrich your life. To take you from the mundane to the highest planes of your world.

And so in ‘baring all’, I’m super delighted to bring you my Birthday Blog! To celebrate and share how I’ve survived and thrived and lived to tell the tale of the:

50 Lessons Life Has Taught Me.

  1. Acceptance

Peaceful acceptance of what is, helps me let go of what I think should be. So roll with the punches, ride with the waves and surrender your expectations and those things you cannot control.

  1. Cycles

The best thought-out plans don’t always work out and I won’t always be at the top of my game. Life is a continuum of cycles, a constant ebb and flow, motion between calm and chaos. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose but in every experience there’s an opportunity to learn and be better.

  1. Kindness Is Classy!

And on top of that, it is free! I live from a place of Kindness and sometimes it seems the entire world yields in my direction. It’s in my smile and in my eyes, it is my very essence! Kindness changes lives, inspires hope and is the universal language of the Soul.

  1. You Are Not Your Pain You Are Not Your Sorrow

So hold on for a brighter tomorrow! I’ve been wounded over and over and the pain is real but I refuse to let it change me in to someone I am not.

  1. Comparison Kills!

No two circumstances are exactly alike and who knows if there are unknown forces or factors that transcend this dimension of space and time. I don’t compare myself to anyone else because I don’t know what they have come here to learn.

  1. You Only Have Control Over You

I have no control over what people say or do, I can only control how I respond to the person, situation or event that comes my way, while still honouring who I am.

  1. What People Say About You Is None Of Your Business

There are over 7 billion people on the face of the planet, each one with their own opinion, ideas, agenda and beliefs. Translated in to your own world makes for an awful lot of voices to give time or importance to!

  1. Friends Are Precious

All the fame and fortune, glitter and glamour don’t mean a thing if there’s no-one there to wipe a tear. No one certain, to know when you’re hurtin. Eveyone’s missin’ when you need someone to listen! I am thankful for the few friends who have always been there in my times of need.

  1. Family is Forever

One of the greatest gifts on earth is family. Although my family is small they have been with me through thick and thin and accept me for who I am. We share an ever-lasting bond and a connection like no other and memories that last a lifetime.

  1. I Gave Them Roots And Wings

I love, love, love being a Mum but now my kids are both grown up and off in to the big old world! As I reflect and wonder where life will take them, I’m comforted by the words of Hodding Carte who assures me they’ll be ok! ‘There Are Two Lasting Bequests We Can Give Our Children: Roots and Wings.’

11.  Parenting Is Precious

The most important job in the world is being a good parent. I have been a single parent all my life and raised two beautiful kids. I enjoy watching them become delightful adults that I am incredibly proud of. To be a great parent I had to be able to F.L.Y! First Love Yourself, that way, I could give them the best of me!

  1. It’s Not What You Leave To Your Children

It’s what you leave IN your children that counts. I may not leave my kids with riches galore but I have left them with so much more! Kindness. love and humanity. Skills and education. Ambition and drive and everything they need to realise their own greatness and make a positive contribution to the world.

  1. You Can Choose To Be a victim Or a Victor

I cannot control the circumstances of my life but I can choose whether to be the victim or the Victor. Since both need similar amounts of energy to maintain, I chose Victor because being Powerful has so much more appeal than being powerless!

  1. Is There’s Always a Reason?

It’s natural to search for some deep, esoteric or mysterious reason to explain the events, encounters or circumstances of your life. But sometimes the reason is, there is no reason, there is no rhyme to it either, it’s just life!

  1. Believe In Yourself

Amongst the doubters and the dubious, the naysayers and the negativity, the haters and the ‘hello, I told you so’ers, believing in yourself is the one thing you MUST always hold on to.

  1. Life Is An Adventure, Live It!

Get out and see more, experience more, learn and grow and expand the full reaches of your wings. Take flight and life to the max, enjoy it, embrace it and celebrate it like it’s your last day, for tomorrow is never promised. Make everyday AMAZING!

  1. Success in NOT An Accident Or a Special Agent

I have not been assigned a Special Agent who watches over me, waving an abracadabra wand to success! Success is a combination of hard work, sacrifice and study, perseverance, patience and passion, consistency and an unwavering self-belief that… YES I can!

  1. Let Go And Let GOODNESS Flow!

I’ve learned that when you hold on to hatred, anger and  the bad things that have happened to you in the past, you end up hating, angry, bitter, jealous, resentful and alone. Let go, forgiveness is freeing and opens a portal for good things to flow in to your life.

  1. You Can Find Solace In Silence

Life is so darn NOISY! The kids, the cars, the tv’s the bars. The hubby nagging, Facebook tagging, neighbours howlin, my sanity is drowning! Take time out! Silence is calling. Listen to the wind, commune with nature, connect within to calm all, with out.

  1. Focus On How Far You’ve Come

When I focus on the problem it causes anxiety but when I step out of that mode and focus on the solution, I’m motivated to ACTION. I become unstoppable and I’m able to overcome the challenges one by one! If focusing on problems changed the outcome, I’d be happy to think about them all day!

  1. Happiness Is Within

No one can bring you happiness but yourself. It doesn’t matter who you surround yourself with or your material acquisition, true and abiding happiness comes from the inside out!

  1. Self-acceptance Above All Else!

I love and accept who I am so the opinions, expectations and judgements of others have neither place nor power in my self-determined world.

  1. Health Is Your Wealth

Taking care of your health is the biggest investment you will ever make and pays dividends in the long run. I have enjoyed an abundance of health and lived free of illness and disease for 50 years. 30 is definitely the new 50 and I can tell you, slim, trim, sexiness is in!

  1. Health Is NOT Rocket Science

Kiss goodbye to the diet fads, the miracle pills and the ‘A, B, C get slim with Me’ Gurus! A healthy lifestyle is mega simple, just fill it up with the right nutrition, regular exercise, sufficient amounts of water and high quality supplements!

  1. Health Is Not Just About Your Body!

Health = Wellness and a way of life that nourishes your mind, body and Spirit. Fun and laughter, joy, good friends and family, a sense of meaning and purpose, intimate and deep relationships, emotional support, intellectual stimulation and growth, new and exciting experiences and adventures, positive thoughts and outlook, meaningful and passionate sex, creative expression and service to humanity all contribute to feeding your soul along your journey to health and wellness!

  1. FEAR Is NOT Real

That False Evidence Appearing Real, is NOT real. It is the self-sabotaging constructs or creations of your mind. Fear stops life! So step out of your comfort zone and in to the light. Goals are never scored in the dark!

  1. I Am Enough

I have learned that no one else can give me what I must give myself.

  1. Be Yourself

As Oscar Wilde puts it ‘Be yourself, everyone else is taken’. Stop trying to fit in, get in, be approved and accepted. You can never be happy living somebody else’s version of who they think you should be. Just be the fantastic, phenomenal, fabuliscious YOU and those around you will love and appreciate the REAL YOU!

  1. Bad Things Happen To Good People

And good things happen to bad people. I used to think our thoughts and actions attract the circumstances of our lives but now I am wiser! I understand that all existence is inextricably woven in to the grand tapestry of cause and consequence to which there is no avoidance.

  1. Laughter Is Good For The Soul

Laugh out loud and even better, make it a good old belly laugh! No matter what you’re doing in life, make time regularly for fun and lots and lots of laughter.

  1. Why Would You Want To Fit In?!

Most of my life I’ve walked tall and refused to walk small. I’ve stood out, never wanting to ‘fit in’. I’ve radiated light, when all I could see was dark. And when I couldn’t even see the road, I chose to make my own!

  1. You Don’t Need to Be Beholden To Old Beliefs!

I don’t accept the status quo, just because you tell me so. My rational mind was created to question and live truth, from my own expression. I won’t swallow untruths, hook, line and sinker, my opinions are mine, I’m a liberated freethinker! 🙂

  1. It’s OK To Cry

Just don’t stay crying. It’s ok to be angry, just don’t stay angry. It’s ok to be sad and disappointed but don’t define yourself by the ever-changing conditions of your transitory world.

  1. Surround Yourself With Loving People

I want to be around people who want to be around me. I surround myself with people who believe in me, value me and celebrate my victories. Who love and support me in the good times and the bad. Those who enjoy when I laugh and are there for me when I cry.

  1. Make A Living Doing What You Love

I worked in the private sector for years and everyday was much like the day before. I got a salary and I made a living. Today I totally love what I do and I’ve made a life. I enjoy freedom and creative expression is my modus operandi . I’m excited about what tomorrow has in store!

  1. Don’t Give Up!

When you chose the path less travelled, it is laden with trials and challenges. I’ve seen things, I never wanted to see. I’ve cried rivers and oceans. I’ve failed so many times. I felt lost and disillusioned but I’ve worked too hard and come too far and guess what? I am NEVER giving up! No matter what I keep moving forward!

  1. Success Does NOT Define You

Each time I’ve fallen, I’ve always been able to get back on my feet again. That’s what defines me! My determination, boldness and resolve, those are the qualities that I love about me that have made me who I am today. Success is the merely the icing on a well made cake!

  1. Love Connects All

I believe that our souls are wired for love and human connection. Beyond the extraneous clothing that we carry around each day, there is a dynamic thread that binds all humanity and it is founded on Love.

  1. Life Is In Perpetual Motion

Nothing is permanent. With the ebb there is flow. That which rises, falls. With growth there is decline and in life there is death. I’m learning to detach my emotional response to life’s comings and goings and to find peace in the middle of a crowded room.

  1. There Is Magic In The Moment

I’ve come to realise that the only time that is real is NOW! Why worry about the past, it’s gone, why fret about the future it’s yet to happen. All life is taking place in the magical moment of now. Do you hear it? The rustling of the trees, the dove in perfect motion, the thunder of the clouds, the meandering of the ocean.

  1. Life Is Not Fair!

Life is not fair, or just and in many ways it’s darn right cruel. But I think about life as a pack of cards. I’ve been dealt my hand and I must accept these cards and play the game with the best of what I have.

  1. Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff

Taken on the trivia is detrimental to your health! Let it go and lighten up! I use this mantra:“Stop Making it Matter’ as a gentle reminder to myself, that at the end of the day most of the stuff I think matters, really doesn’t!

  1. Never Stop Growing

The moment you stop growing, you stop living! There’s a vast ocean of goodies out there just waiting to be explored! Start a new dance class, learn a foreign language, read a new book. Expand your mind. Growing is life’s way of painting a rainbow of colours on your soul.

  1. This Too Shall Pass

I know how dark in can get. I know how hopeless it can seem. I know the road is long and hard but I also know even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise. Nothing lasts forever, you will make it through!

  1. The World Needs You

My one desire is to leave our world a little better than it was when I got here! Serving others and making a positive contribution to humanity is life’s highest honour.

  1. Change Is Inevitable

Everything is subject to change, in fact the only constant in life is change itself. So don’t resist it. Embrace the inevitable changes of life. The Naturalist Charles Darwin believed it is was not the strongest, nor the most intelligent species that survives but the one that is most adaptable to change.

  1. Being Together Is Better Than Being Alone

There have been times in my life when I’ve been alone and I’ve enjoyed it but I’ve never wanted to stay alone. It’s beautiful to wake up in love with someone who’s gaga over me! I love that I share my life with that special person which makes it all the more worthwhile.

  1. There is Strength In Being Vulnerable

Allowing myself to be open and vulnerable in my relationship is scary but it also creates a platform for a deep authentic connection that supports love and trust. I love the romance as much as I love that he’s my rock!

  1. Live Each Day With Gratitude

Living in a perpetual state of gratitude engenders humility and grace. I am grateful for the very essence of life in the various forms it shows up. There is so much I am thankful for from food on the table to family and friends.

  1. Inspire, Be Inspired And Live In Awe

Dwell in the fullness and beauty of life because life’s not just about living, it’s about feeling alive! BE the inspiration not by what you say but by what you do and what you give. Be inspired by the challenges ahead, by the uncertainty of the unknown and Live in Awe of each spectacular moment! Each day is a new beginning with new and endless possibilities to make it even better than the day before!

Gee thanks so much Joan, yes it’s been quite a journey up to now and so many things learned along the way. There’s a ton load of other stuff I wanted to include in this blog but I’ll save that for the next milestone! This stage of our lives is so much about who we’ve become and how we want to share it with the world. I know your all about sharing your phenomenal self and helping others do the same and that’s pretty awesome! I hope you’re in a good place at 52 and continue so, it should be the best time of our lives!! 🙂

  3. Stacy says:

Great share! Being I am a bit younger but starting my journey with kids this was a great read. I can take a lot of from your life lessons and use them in my own life.

    Thanks again for sharing!

  4. Rose Flowers says:

I love these!! They all are so true!! I am starting to listen and learn and I have found that when we apply these principles, they make life a whole lot happier, easier, and more enjoyable. 🙂

    Thanks for this!

  5. This is everyone because this is life. What really counts is what you have gleaned from your 50 years. All the lessons and it can be a book, like “Everything I needed to know I learned in Kindergarten.” When I turned 60 I did a pictorial page for every year. Now at 76 there is still so much more. I so enjoyed reading this as it resonated with me. You are a beautiful soul. Happy Birthday and a long life.

  6. What a fantastic list Michelle, so many moments and ‘oh yesses’ and oohs and ‘me too’s’ in there… I’m going to re-read this, as I was so excited reading them through. How lovely to learn about your life too!
Life is indeed a journey, and just reading this brings up so many emotions and memories… I’m saving it on Pinterest and sharing around.
    Brilliant job 😀

  7. Michee says:

Thank you Stacy, I sometimes think if only I knew then what I know now, things might have worked out differently for me but saying so, I have no regrets because everything I have learned has helped me grow in to the person I actually really love today! I hope you take something from my life lessons and be the best you can be for yourself and your family. ❤

  8. Michee says:

I appreciate your comments Rose! I think life is a continuous lesson that teaches so much along the way but it’s what we do with the lessons that bring about the happiness and peace we are all searching for. Action gets you the home run! 🙂

  9. Michee says:

You are so very kind Roslyn, thank you for your continuous support and for valuing me, I appreciate you very much. I hope that when I get to you age my life is as full and fulfilled as yours! You are so right about ‘this is life’. All the ups and down, challenges and triumphs, tears and laughter, they all constitute to this magical journey called life. The spin we put on it determines whether its a comedy or a tragedy! I wish you a long and rich life full of laughter, love, good family and friends and most importantly good health and peace! ❤

  10. Michee says:

Thank you very much Jacs, I’m so glad my blog resonated with you! Actually it was an emotional piece of writing as I reflected on different stages of my life. I realise the time we are here is so very short and how important it is to grab every moment of joy and happiness while we can! For me, something changes when you hit 50, my kids are all grown up and it’s a new season for adventure! 🙂 I appreciate you sharing my blog around!
